Plainview-Old Bethpage Fourth Graders Explore Native American Culture

A large group of children, both boys and girls, sitting on the floor of what appears to be a classroom or community space, with adults standing behind them.

From Oct. 15-30, fourth graders across Plainview-Old Bethpage participated in the
Journeys Into American Indian Territory program, a hands-on experience highlighting Native American traditions and culture. Students rotated through interactive sessions that included museum presentations, games, stories, craft projects, music and dance.

During the program, students played Atenaha by rolling hand-carved dice on deer skin and using corn and beans to keep score, completed symbol projects to illustrate and retell stories and explored Haudenosaunee governance by practicing decision-making in a council.

The experience helped students make meaningful connections between Native American legends, community and leadership while growing their appreciation for nature and natural resources.
