Plainview-Old Bethpage Elementary Schools Participate in Day in Clay

Throughout December, fourth graders across the Plainview-Old Bethpage School District participated in Day in Clay, a hands-on art experience led by artist Cliff Mendelson. The program introduced students to the creative process behind clay artwork and explored design, form and function across African, Asian, Latin and Native American, and Greek cultures and traditions. Students learned how patterns and symbols reflect the stories and values of different cultures, deepening their understanding of the connection between art and society.

Each student created a clay pot incorporating the designs taught during the workshop. After curing for several weeks, the pots will be painted. Throughout the lesson, students asked questions about how clay vessels were used historically and how they continue to be used today.
