Pasadena Students Explore the World of Weather Reporting

On Oct. 14, meteorologist John Marshall visited Pasadena Elementary School to give third graders an up-close look at the science behind weather forecasting.

Marshall led students in lively discussions about the Earth’s seasons and how the planet’s tilt affects temperature and sunlight throughout the year. They also explored solstices and the stages of the water cycle, building a strong foundation in earth science.

Using tools such as a wind vane and anemometer, students learned how meteorologists measure wind direction and speed. They examined different types of clouds, discovered how to estimate the distance of a storm, and even learned how professionals predict weather patterns. The presentation also covered various types of storms and where in the world they most commonly form.

To conclude the lesson, Marshall transformed the classroom into a mini newsroom. With a green screen, projector and computer, student volunteers stepped into the role of weather reporters, delivering a weekly forecast and sharing updates on natural events.

Thank you to the PTA for sponsoring this fun and interactive learning experience!
